How To: Spooky Thrift Store Painting

spooky painting

I've followed this trend around Instagram and have absolutely loved seeing old, cast aside art prints be given new life! Even the earliest beginners can paint to their ability levels and walk away with a successful, seasonally appropriate piece of artwork to cherish. This proved to be the perfect opportunity to get a few of my gal pals together for a little hocus pocus!

Most local thrift shops carry artwork! We hit the jackpot at Goodwill and Stars Resale in downtown Wheaton. I find it easiest to choose a piece for its size and frame, considering where this will go in your home. In most cases, the paper backing on a frame and can be easily removed. Most art prints are secured with tabs or staples that can be bent back with a screwdriver or butter knife.

As for paints, I really like Target's Martha Stewart craft paints and here's a nice little brush set. Target's Handmade Modern multi-surface paints are also a solid pick! They come in a lovely range of colors and they're the perfect consistency. They also carry this brush set, which would be perfect for this project as you'd need a large flat brush for painting the bulk of it and a medium round brush for details.

To keep the hands free and creative juices flowing, I assembled a charcuterie spread on my beautiful ETU Home board and picked up delicious salads from Moveable Feast. I find that small, quick bites are best for painting events.

This same goofy social platform has also blessed me with local creative minded friends who were up to the task! I am so fortunate to have gotten to know Patty of Glen Ellyn Moms Village, Kelly Smith of Cheeky Chairs, Anne Marie of Simply Staged & Styled, Cat of Kitty Meow Boutique, and Leslie of Life of a Wheaton Mom. Many fantastic conversations were had and we all came away from it with a renewed sense of creativity and community.

Overall, this was the perfect activity for an afternoon with girlfriends or a cozy night's DIY with a glass of wine and your favorite pumpkin spiced brew! If you try your hand at these, please send pics so that I can cheer you on :)
